Ducks…

Well, it has been an interesting week for farm yard birds…

Yesterday, my son sent me numerous texts citing an instant emergency. With him, that could mean police involvement or a hang nail. Actually, that could be either of my children. Getting the text

“MOM!!

MOM!!!!!!!!!

ITS AN EMERGENCY!

MOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

while I was in a meeting for work, always sets my nervous system up for distress and dis-ease. I texted back:

“WHAT!??????

ARE YOU OK?????

WHAT????”

Here is what I got back:

“We found baby ducks…”

Relieved but puzzled, I responded again:

“WHAT????!!!!”

Reply:

“We were driving up the 33 and found baby ducks in the middle of the road.”

Me:

“Ummmm, ok. That is weird.”

Reply:

“Yes, we are bringing them to you now.”

Me:

“Wait, what? Oh, ok…(accepting my fate in this life as a pet repository).”

And so, $50 dollars later after the feed store, I am now the proud parent of baby ducks. Hewey and Dewey. (I didn’t name them).

We set them up in the old chicken coop which has been vacant since the goats left. I checked on them this morning and they were huddled together all soft and feathery.

So my next question is:

Who would like two baby ducks???? Free transport. Free ducks!

I do not want to keep them. I am happy to give them a safe place in the interim but my life trajectory in the coming months is full of travel and I do not want to add anything more to my already insane pet care list. And if I am going to have farm animals again, I want to actually have a farm…with land and the proper place for the animals where they can enjoy themselves and so can I.

Hit me up if you are in the market for two slightly traumatize ducklings…they are quite sweet and relatively quiet.

I am reminded again this is just how life is, you never know what is coming for you. I can tell you I did NOT see baby ducks in my future when I woke up yesterday, and yet here they are. Which leads me to believe that perhaps something is getting screwed up with my manifestation requests because I am very sure ducks were not manifested. Yet here they are….hmmmm, what rhymes with ducks???

Anyway, my menagerie grew a little yesterday and I am grateful to always be able to provide a safe harbor for wayward animals: currently ducks, but also doves, crows, cats, kittens, dogs, puppies and whatever else might come my way. I really do not have the ability to say no. I really do not. I write this as my last rescue, bottle-fed kitten lies purring on my lap.

It is a good life, now with the added pleasure of ducklings I didn’t see coming. Acceptance really is a gift. And so are ducklings.

Again…still.
